The other day, I argued that the process of making art was not as important as the final product. Ever since then, Ive been trying to figure out what makes the final product good. Its one thing to look at a piece of art, and find it pleasing to the eye, but thats not always what makes it successful. I think all good art challenges your intellect on some level.
I also starting thinking about what precedes the process. Does good art start with a good idea? I realized that some of my best ideas have been conceived during the process, and not before it. So maybe the process is more important to the artist, and not as much to the viewer. The viewer still only benefits from the final product.
Maybe Im not making sense yet, but Ive been thinking about this for two days. Ive been researching a lot of Marcell Duchamp, because he was a name that kept coming up during my initial argument. I think Duchamp challenged the idea, the process, and the product, as well as the intellect of the viewer. I think theres some more answers in his work, but I have to keep looking.
