During high school I could not get enough of horror movies- particularly ones from Asia (Japan and Korea make the best films, in my opinion). Nowadays, I feel like my taste has maybe evolved toward liking more of suspenseful, mind-fuck sorta films. Here are a few of my favorites just off the top of my head.
A few years ago America did a remake of this called "The Uninvited", but having seen the original Korean one first, I was biased. Although there aren't really any horrifying scenes, there was one in particular during dinner time that made me jump the first time I watched it.
El Orfanato
I absolutely love everything Guillermo del Toro does, he truly has a fantastic imagination, especially creating and designing characters (see: Pans Labyrinth). This film, however, doesn't have much out of the ordinary. Just a creepy tale with a sad twist.
Dark Water
Based off a short story from Koji Suzuki's book of the same name. Suzuki is one of my all-time favorite authors, and definitely my favorite author of horror (he's also behind The Ring series). This movie, while generally creepy and dark becomes even creepier with REAL LIFE EVENTS that took place in Los Angeles at The Cecil Hotel years after the book had been written and the movie was released.
