It's confirmed. After over 10 years of observation and detailed notes, I can say for sure that there is a turf war being waged in and around my street. The belligerents are spread across three known factions: The cats, the raccoon and the skunks. Every night one of three engages in heated battle. This is usually confirmed by patches of hair and occasionally lifeless bodies in and around the same area. Each marks its territory in diverse manners. Claw marks on trees, pungent fluids from anal glands and even overturned garbage and recycling cans are common markers. There have been rumours that another group could possibly muscle them selves in and even form an alliance with one of three. Sciurus carolinensis.
I have yet to observe any signs of such an event but will make sure to keep an eye out and an ear to the ground. Not too close though.
