ON THE WAY
She weaved and worked her way through the early afternoon traffic. The compact size of the car made the task a lot easier and enjoyable.
I guess someones in a hurry to get home. he said holding onto a handle above his head.
My bladder owns me right now. she said between shifting gears.
You do realize we were standing right next to the restrooms when we were at the airport, right? he asked.
I never liked public restrooms, let alone the ones found in airports. Theres something about them that gives me the creeps. she said taking the car onto the highway access ramp.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot about that. Youre probably one of the only people I know who likes to keep tabs on which butt cheeks have been on which toilet bowl. he said looking at him self in the overhead passenger mirror. He spotted the early stages of a pimple on his chin. Something hed attend to at a later time.
She brought the car to a sensible cruising speed matching the motion of the other cars on the highway. The recently remade pavement made the ride all the more smoother. Settling into fifth gear, she merged into the fast lane and kept up with a motorcycle ahead of her. She turned on the radio and landed on a sweet Sam Cooke song.
Damn I missed that kind of music. he said during the guitar solo part of the song.
What do you mean? she asked.
I didnt have access to a radio and it seemed like the locals werent savvy when it came to soul music. he said putting emphasis on the SOUL part of his phrase by clenching his fists and bringing them to his chest.
That almost looked like an orgasmic experience Sally McPhearson. she said looking at him from the corner of her eye.
Oh shut up. Youre just jealous you cant feel the music. he said swaying his head from side to side as the music played.
The only music that I like to hear is the sweet sound that comes from my baby. she said gently stroking her dashboard.
Traffic ahead of her suddenly slowed forcing her to downshift in a rapid manner. As cars continued to roll, she took this momentary lapse of speed to pull out a cigarette from a compartment under an armrest and lit it with an old worn brass lighter. Tossing the pack and the lighter back under the armrest, she opened her window wide enough to recycle the air inside the car. Taking a long drag from her slender cigarette, she held it between her index and middle finger as she sped up and changed gears.
Damn you and your smokes. he said.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot you went cold turkey before you left. Want a drag? she said offering him her cigarette.
I dont want to touch those things but I wouldnt mind a shotgun. he said exhaling resisting the nicotine cravings.
