Jack Reacher
It took me a while to see this film, not because I didnt want to or because it was getting poor reviews elsewhere. No it was because this movie got lost in theatres due to its release after The Hobbit, and before Django Unchained. A result of poor timing this movie hasnt gotten the press, or the audience it actually deserves.
The movie is based on one of a series of books whos protagonist is named Jack Reacher. He is a former Army Military Police officer, turned drifter who lives off the grid has only a bank account, no drivers licence, no cell phone, no credit cards, honestly not even a suitcase. Having not read the novels I cannot tell you how far if at all it deviates from the book it is based off of, but regardless, the movie certainly delivered.
One thing that many audience members will appreciate is that it starts quickly. No preamble, no long drawn out character development just BANG! Literally it starts with five sniper kills in Pittsburgh and then the raid on the suspects home. Jack Reacher becomes involved after seeing the killings on the news and leaves Florida due to a connection with the suspect.
Jack is introduced to you as the District Attorney and the lead investigator are discussing his background and how to reach him as our suspect asked for him rather then confess to the crime despite the mountain of physical evidence against him.
As Jack arrives he ends up instead working with the defence attorney rather than the D.A. while this runs counter to his goal it gives him the access to what he needs. He isnt out to prove guilt or innocence hes a right and wrong character that metes out his own justice.
This is an Action/Crime movie and it had the requisite fight scenes, car chases and gun fights that you have come to expect from these films, however it also has clever dialogue, good sexual tension, and more than a few laughs and cringe worthy moments that keep you engaged throughout the movie. While it is unlikely to win any awards it is a solid entry into the genre and certainly worth the price of admission. Provided you are seeing it on cheap night.
I wont say it was a bad film, it wasnt but it got lost for a reason. The reason being that there are many other better films out at the moment. The Hobbit, Django Unchained, Les Misrables, even This is 40, would all likely be higher on my list to see than Jack Reacher. Not because its a bad film, but because there are better choices out there right now.
3.5/5

Your new year sounds very much like mine. At least we had no reason to pay a visit to the porcelain god.
I don't think I'll bother watching the Reacher movie on the big screen, there are so many other movies I would rather see.
