So tonights film was Killing Them Softy a movie about two dumb criminals who knock over a mobsters card game, and the economic fallout that ensues. Since mobsters dont like people who steal from them a hit man is called in to deal with the problem.
The story itself takes place during the run up to the 2008 election when the American banking system took a dump that has backed up the financial plumbing for the last four years, and youll hear the commentary in the background throughout the film.
Despite the fact that this is an independently produced film the cinematography was excellent, and the few special effects that were in the film were all well done. Perhaps the only thing that missed the mark was the tempo of the film, it meandered a bit but never left the plot behind. Some parts could have moved faster, others could have used a little more exposition, and at a 97 minute run time they could have added it, or if they needed to keep the length remove some meandering parts, to add the exposition.
At some point I will stop being surprised by how good an actor Brad Pitt actually is, between Money Ball, Burn After Reading, Seven Years in Tibet, really this guy does a really good job, and he isnt afraid to make fun of himself in the process. The rest of the cast was pretty good too. Ray Liotta played a good small time wise guy, and the actors that played the dumb criminals were perfection. So believable that you thought they were those people you knew in high school that would be that dumb criminal that was featured on an episode of Dumbest Criminals
While I did enjoy the movie it wont be for everyone, its at time meandering pace, character jumping, and heavy dialouge will definitely turn people away from the film, but it is still a worth while watch, even if you wait for it on Blu Ray or Netflix.
Overall Rating 3.5/5
