So I saw Skyfall the new James Bond movie, and it certainly lived up to the hype that preceeded its release to theatres, and lets be honest few movies really do that these days, however considering this movie release marked the 50th Anniversery of James Bond movies it really wasnt all that surprising.
Now since Daniel Craig took over the roll of James Bond, and Sony purchased the rights the franchise has become significantly less cheesy. No more super gadgets no more submersable cars, exploding pens, or laser watches. While some people didnt like this change I found it a welcome change, and to be totally honest the Pierce Brosnon era of Bond movies almost soured the whole franchise for me.
This movie reintroduced Q for the first time since Craig took over, and reinvented him too. No longer the stodgy old fuss bucket, now he is a young technical expert. Some gadgets came back, but nothing unrealistic so no complaints from me.
Now the rest of the movie was a combination of the old and the new, and everyone was up to the challenge. The Dame Judi Dench is perhaps the most amazing actress to ever come out of England, and she delivered in a difficult roll, M takes centre stage in this film not just a support roll, and while its still James story M is more integral than ever.
The villian played by Javier Bardem was over the top, and he was brilliant. I honestly wonder if he isnt a highly organised psychopath because he plays one so well. If I hadnt seen him in The Sea Inside back in 2004 I would be absolutely convinced. If you havent seen him in any other movies I highly recommend checking out his filmography as I really dont think he has ever made a bad movie.
Daniel Craig continues to cement himself as my favourite Bond combining the wit and humour of Connerys Bond, with his own stoic resolve. While he gets to show a little more humanity in this movie it doesnt detract from the character hes grown into.
The one thing I nearly forgot to mention was how beautiful the movie was! Almost entirely shot on location, something rarely done in the movies today it reminded me that I need to get my passport renewed. I miss England, Scotland, and Shanghi looked amazing, and I think that Istanbul made it to my places to visit before I die list. It has been nearly 20 years since I visited across the pond, and it is over due.
All in all it was an excellent movie, very much an escape from the day to day. While not the super realistic spy movie like Argo was it was, it was exactly what you would expect from a Bond movie while adding to its rich history.
This movie ranks 4/5, is worth the price of admission and is a movie that not only will I see again in theatre I cant wait to add it to my Blue Ray collection.
And of course James Bond will return.
