After trying and trying I finally got to see the movie Argo For those of you that don't know this is a telling of the true story of the escape of six American embassy workers from Iran during the Iran Hostage Crisis from November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981 when they were finally released.
The movie was amazing, there are no two ways about it. Ben Affleck did an amazing job as both an actor and director, and after The Town a couple of years ago I really shouldn't be surprised. He has come a long way from Daredevil.
Most of the remaining cast are relative unknowns, or indie movie specialists with a few notable exceptions however those faces you recognise are in minor support roles than leading. Truly it wasn't until I got home and looked up the cast on IMDb that I realised Clea DuVall played one of the escaped embassy workers. (She had a bunch of rolls in the late 90's but has been pretty obscure since now I'm showing my age).
All played their rolls very well. No Oscar worth acting performances but certainly good work all around. The Canadian Ambassador was played by a Canadian actor as well Victor Garber, who is well known for his work on Canadian programming.
As for authenticity this movie was perhaps as close to an actual intelligence/spy movie as I have ever seen. From the behind the scenes to not being able to take credit for the rescue to setting up the cover identities it all felt authentic. Now obviously there was some Hollywood embellishment and it was easy to spot. However it didn't detract from the story being told. I won't spoil the Hollywood moment I'll let you spot it yourself. All in all I will give this a 4.5/5 rating a must see movie with one caveat. Don't see it if you are expecting an heat stopping action spy film. Wait for 007 in Skyfall for that, it's been getting a very warm reception across the pond in England where it's already in theatres.
Of course some nerdy humour.
