Movie Review Time!!!!!!
The Bourne Legacy
If you read the Robert Ludlum novels you know that NONE of the Bourne movies followed the books and went on their own journey. This movie expands on that journey and continues not to follow the novels. That is fine, and why the movie works. If they tried to go back to the novels, or try incorperate more of the Jason Bourne movies into this title, it would lose its value as it was designed to be a stand alone movie, separate from the first three, but using it as a plot point and motivation for the characters that are in positions of power. This movie was about what governments do to keep us safe, that cannot be told. While this goes into ethical grey areas that I know well and understand and I thought it was well explored. It also goes into ethical grey areas about genetic engineering and manipulation of the human genome, and while this isnt deeply explored the work that Rachel Wiezs character does her rationalisation of the issues is one that fits perfectly, and I thought was one of the best parts of the movie. I really wish that was explored more, I however am I sucker for ethical debates.
The field craft displayed in the movie was fairly realistic, and worked within the genre of the Bourne movies and was equal or better than the field craft that you see in most spy movies. There are enough action scenes to keep the casual fan interested, but like the previous films they are also subdued and more realistic than what people may be used to seeing in most action movies. There were the obligatory fights, explosions and chase scenes, but not so many that it distracted from the story being told.
All in all with the how the actors played their roles, from Edward Norton being a cold calculating ass, to Rachel Wiez being a intelligent strong woman that you watched grow into her character was nice, Jeremy Renners character was a little one dimesional. As the movie progressed he gained some depth, but really could have been developed better considering the length of the film itself.
So my final rating is a 4/5 worth seeing but let the old Bourne movies go, this is its own film, its own character, and its own ethical deilema. I actually had about an hour long conversation about behavioural modification, and genetic engineering after the movie so go see it. Discuss the deeper issues of the film, even if they werent fully explored in the movie. Its up to you.
