I have spent the past few days in Kurdistan, which is in Northern Iraq. The Kurds have their own government but are part of Iraq, mainly because of the break up of the former Soviet Union. Saddam waged war and genocide against the Kurds so they are not big fans of Arabs. It is a different country here for sure. It is safe and Americans are very welcome here.
I spent a day walking through the old Turkish citadel, which is built on the ruins of the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Someone has lived in this location since 7500 BC. It was the religious center of the Assyrians and the home of the Temple of the Goddess Ishtar. It witnessed all three epochs of the Mesopotamian pre-history and history.
