I get a lot of criticism in my neck of the woods. And a good portion of it has to do with my current relationship. You see, people don't seem to like my gentleman friend (Peter) because:
1.He doesn't drink much and doesn't like bars, therefore doesn't come out with me, often. For a long time, a large number of people didn't even know I had a boyfriend. And when I tell them why he's not there I get all this "If you were my girl, I would never let you go out by yourself. I would always accompany you wherever you want to go."
THAT'S NOT CHIVALRY!!!!! ITS SMUTHERING!!!! . . . at least, in my book.
2. He lets me walk around Milwaukee, by myself, AT NIGHT!!!! Dangerous? Sure. But so is sitting in my house (by myself, at night) in my neighborhood. One night I was at my friend's house with a bunch of people and I was about to walk home. This dude took my phone out of my bag, called Pete, reemed him out, and made him come and get me. Not only that, but the guy asks me, "How come you fuck this guy and he doesn't do what you want him to?"
BECAUSE I WANT A LOVER, NOT A BITCH!!!!!
People seem to think my relationship is fucked up because we actually maintain some independence from eachother. Guys don't want to hear me when I tell them, that's how I want it. I have plenty of fun going out without him, especially because he doesn't like the places I go AND THAT'S OK! He helps me out when I ask for it, but I don't want to make it his responsibility to drop everything and pick me up whenever I need to leave somewhere. And I'm sure as hell not gonna let the "scary wittle city" stop me from doing what I want to do. If I get raped and killed, he'd be pretty sad and he might be sorry, but I won't be.
