Sweet Escape is my very first self shot set for Suicidegirls, but this set was the product of a lot of firsts actually! When I found out about the SG Self Shot Contest, the deadline was not very far away and since I had JUST bought a new camera and it came in right in time, I decided to say fuck it and go for it! Having switched over from Nikon to Canon I hadn't realized my shutter release remote I previously used would not be compatible, and so I shot entirely with self timer which was an interesting challenge. On top of that I was just getting to know/playing around with my new camera for realistically, the first time. I also had my battery die in the middle of shooting, which should not have been an issue, because I made sure to get multiple compatible batteries with my new camera, just as I have with my Nikon.. unfortunately my back up battery had not held it's charge for some reason and I was left to have to stop shooting for a decent amount of time to make sure it would charge long enough to let me shoot while the replacement charged so I wouldn't be juggling batteries like crazy.. Needless to say I had a bit of a moment and questioned if I should even finish shooting or not.

Obviously I decided to continue shooting, and did the best I could to battle the sun going down. It was a challenge, but I'm still really happy with what came of the set even with all the unexpected challenges that arose. Aside from all the craziness during shooting overall, this was my very first set with a "natural" hair color, though it is a wig, I have never shot with anything both colorful crazy colors, unless you count Cerulean Splash, where I also where a wig, for the cosplay. I wanted to switch it up a bit and play with the wig I actually had gotten for a Carol Baskin cosplay lol. I'm excited to see the response to something a little different than my normal rainbow vibe.
And last but probably my favorite "'first" of all, the self shot contest gave me a reason/excuse to push myself to shoot an sg set in my own environment, something I usually would not easily be able to do, due to my rescue doggo who is very territorial and skittish with new people, so inviting a photog over who wants to get in and be able to get to work and shoot, without having a crazy gremlin do darting around barking at them, is not gonna want to come shoot at my place (and understandably so, lol.) So this is the first time I got to shoot something in my own home/space.
When I shot the set I could not for the life of me firgue out any other name that felt fitting for it other than "Sweet Escape". Some sets names just come to me and I can't think of anything else, other sets I sit for days and can't figure out for the life of me what to call it. Originally I thought the name Sweet Escape stuck out because the wig reminds me of a Gwen Stefani moment, and that my home/sanctuary is my sweet escape especially during times like these.. But later I realized it was also probably my subconcious signaling to me. The painting behind me through out most of the set (and above) is actually a triptic oil painting done my none other than my mama bear. It is called "Escape", go figure! I didn't even put it together until a few weeks before it's release, and now I'm so happy I stuck with my initial title. You can check it out now and leave some love if you feel so inclined 💗
Did you notice all the sets in MR that are self shot coming out the last few weeks/month or so? I've been LOVING seeing everyone's different creative takes on the concept. And even with the hiccups in my own, I had so much fun shooting and working on it, so this will not be the last self shot set you see from me! Who have been some of your favorite self shot sets on the site?
