Well, Ive actually had a pretty interesting week for once.
On Wednesday night I had the honor of seeing the inspirational Jane Goodall speak. She is so amazing, and so wise. She gave a synopsis of her lifes work (groundbreaking primate research plus one of the first accepted female field researchers), but she mostly spoke on current issues. Apparently her love of chimps has led down the path to environmental activism. It is so scary what we are doing to our world. Anyway, I digress.
So that was a great and positive experience out of the house, and I was thinking mayhaps conquering this social phobia thing wont be so bad. Thursday night I went to the 'Rock Against Bush' concert, featuring NoFX, who I like, a bunch of crap ass Pop-Punk bands, that can suck my phat one, and Jello Biafra, who is the only man I would consider breeding with. I love respect admire Jello to no end, and was thrilled at the prospect of finally being able to hear him speak live.
Did you know that NoFX has a big skinhead following? Yeah, I waded my way to the center of the pit as Jello took the stage. Well, he got all of five minutes into his speech before the guy in front of me started yelling "get off the stage FaGGOT!" A bunch of other kidz around me put up their middle fingers and didnt take them down until he left the stage, which he did after a large majority of the pit had been chanting "NoFX, NoFX" thru the last half of his speech. After he was done the skinheads turned on the crowd looking for fights, calling us faggots for listening to that shit. I was so sick to my stomach I left before NoFX played.
The thing is, the fuckin concert was called 'Rock Against Bush', and was an attempt at getting youth registered to vote and politically active. Whatever, thanks for re-affirming why I don't go out. I absolutely do not identify with my supposed 'peers'.
So I got too drunk last night.
But today was awesome! I had a brunch meeting with the head of the Biology department at my community college (who has kind of taken me under his wing and seriously changed my life with the opportunities he has given me) and a graduate student at the University. She is an ex student of his and is now doing her graduate study on parasites, which is what I'm interested in. So he introduced me to her (and she was so fabulous) and hopefully she will be able to get me a job working in the parasitology lab this summer!!! And maybe go with her to do her field work for a month in Mexico!!! Im so fucking excited.
And tonight I had a Passover seder with the Boys family, which was so nice and relaxing. I would never belong to an organized religion, but I absolutely love the traditions of Judaism. It has been in and out of my life since I was born, and is the closest thing I have to spirituality. It is definately calming for me.
Wow, I just realized I wrote a fucking novel. Its cool, I dont expect you to read it.
