a poker story from sunday:
"4-way poker game tonight. $20 buy in. tournament style, so the top two players won $20 and $60. within an hour, i was down to $5 and had counted myself out. was playing on tilt.
"but, i hung in. don't know how. won a couple of good hands.
"at 10pm, the game shifted to no-limit from 4-bit, $1 bets. jacks went out first, and i startd to lose again. way too many lousy hands had to be mucked. anothre player started to lose a little faster than me, though, and went all in when i had a five in the hole and two more showing on the flop. so, i matched him. so did the other guy. next card dropped and it was another five. the odds of a four of a kind are 4,164 to one. there was no way anyone could have a better hand. i had what hold 'em players call the nuts.
"so, i said, i'm all in! too soon. it was the other guys bet. he checked, knowing wht i was going to do.
"i pushed my stack in. $18 and some change. figured he'd muck it, as it was clear i had the hand.
"figured wrong. he thought i was bluffing because he called me.
"i'm home now, $40 richer. after that, the game was mine. i bullied him around for a few more hands, and walked away with the pot.
"he had had a couple of nines in the pocket, by the bye. a boat, fives over nines. great hand any other night."
