michel gondry is pretty fascinating. someone loaned me a dvd with his videos and short films.
i'm reading a book called bobby fischer goes to war. it's about bobby's attempt to break the soviet stranglehold on the world chess championship. fischer was a genius. he was also (is also, i guess) quite a wack job.
spalding drowned. he has a famous monologue called swimming to cambodia. the poster--and cover of the vhs box--shows him up to his nose in water.
this is probably just me: there might be some sort of comfort in dying in a way that satirizes an element of your life. at least for the more existentialist personality types. life is absurd, why not make death a touch absurd as well?
again, i'll bet it's just me. poor spald's family probably wouldn't think there's much funny in his death.
so, i apologize.

Sometimes you have to make light of it....there were plenty of times when my dad and I would joke around in the embalming room. Nothing really rude or disrespectful, but most people wouldn't understand why things were funny to us. There were even some really funny moments at my grandfather's funeral, like the octogenarian riflemen arguing and firing off cue during the 21 gun salute.
