I stood and held my friend tonight while he was crying. I held him until his taxi arrived so he could go back to the house of the woman he loves, the woman who is carrying his child, the woman who sleeps with him almost every night. She was at the club we had just left, all over one of his friends. She tells him to wait and see so things might get better, that they might have a chance of working out. She tells him not to kiss her in public so others don't get 'confused'. She tells him they have something special and that she loves him. What she doesn't tell him is the truth, and she doesn't tell him that because, in my opinion, stating it out loud would shame her for how she acts.
If you have any grace in this life you should only tell the truth to others unless the truth will kill. If you have any dignity in this life you should not shop around for 'better' feelings and attention, but wait for them to come to you - and appreciate what you do have while it's there. If you have any respect in this life you should treat others as you would yourself be treated, consider their feelings and be fully aware that they are a breathing, living human being just like you. There is precious little grace, dignity or respect in most lives.
I stood and held my friend tonight while he was crying. All because one individual on this planet is too concerned with instant sensation to realise that a cause has an effect and that her actions, if not properly considered, can have devastating consequences for others. It's such a simple little thing, to go through your existence with respect for the other beings that share the rare bond of life with you. It really is so easy. And yet it escapes so many.
Truth. Honour. Grace. Dignity. Respect. Beauty. Love. Evaluate your daily actions and see if they pass these words unscathed.
If they don't, ask yourself why.
