Dear @rambo @missy and @lyxzen,
thanks for this amazing topic!
As I'm young and white and ablebodied and of what seems to be a "normal weight", i feel I'm in a somewhat difficult position regarding most of the discrimination going on in this fucked up system.
That said, let's talk about something all of us girls have to get through each and every day: sexism.
Don't get me wrong, i love all the members on this site leaving charming comments or rooting for their favorite hopeful. Only a fool would confuse sexism with sex. What I'm talking about is happening on the outside of this amazing network and you don't even have to google it. Just open the other browser tab, connected to facebook, choose a random girl from your friend list and go through her profile pic comments. I betcha to find at least one comment suggesting she's a slut or bitch or whatever guys in her life come up with to insult her for posting beautiful pictures of herself.
So, why is this sexist?
Well, now turn to facebook once again and look at one of your buddys profiles. Maybe just the one who mocked everyone in highschool and who now seems to be a fitnesstrainer/C.E.O./surferboy hybrid. Look at his pictures from Hawaii, all topless and flexed muscles - can you find a comment there, suggesting this is going to far or a bit too much for children's eyes on facebook? I guess not.
Of course this is just a very tiny example of how women are degraded the second they remove their shirt, whereas men will not even be noticed to do so. Oh, how many times did i have to explain myself for wanting to be a suicidegirl. Reactions vary from "oh, so you're THAT kind of a model now" to "well, i guess you earn a lot more over there!". When i tell people i don't earn a dime on SG right now, they immediately jump from slutshaming to pity, telling me this website is exploiting girls and making a fortune out of their nakedness.
This makes me beyond mad because it implicates i didn't once think this through or be responsible for myself. How is it so hard for everyone to accept that some girls actually LIKE being naked on the internet? LIKE getting in touch with guys from overseas who just saw their boobs and now chat about star wars with them? LIKE to look at other beautiful girls bodies, without even being a pansexual like me?
It shouldn't be so hard to believe that grown women can make their own decisions, based on self reflection and facing all the consequences. Whenever a girl joins this safe and unique platform her friends (male as much as female) should be happy for her, instead of taking the bait of structural sexism and feeling superior to the " poor girl selling their body".
Thanks SG peeps for mostly not being those kinds of people and looking beyond the curtain of sexist mechanisms. Let's not care what they think of us on the outside and celebrate our bodies!
Cheers ❤💪
