I think yesterday was the first time in my seafaring career that I actually felt good about standing duty (24 hours of chillin' on the ship). Usually a duty day consists of me waiting around for a fire drill, watching TV shittily (I always end up on C-Span's BookTV), and half-hearted playing my guitar. Not exactly the best usage of my time. Yesterday was different though. Instead of my usual slouching, I actually participated in the fire drill which consists of me donning fire fighting equipment and traipsing around the "fire scene" for about 30 minutes, but I felt like I was accomplishing something. After that, I worked out a couple of song ideas that I can hopefully turn into songs. Finally ending the night finishing two books, and falling asleep to webcasts of This American Life.
The Navy life may not be the best, but I think I'm going to take a hint from my friend Scott La Rock and make the best out of it.
