I am never watching anything in hopes that it will satisfy a morbid curiosity ever again.
This is a promise.
I promote music to radio stations, which make up a good percentage of what would be considered media outlets. In case you didnt know, most of these outlets whether they focus on news, music, whatever, are somehow connected and ultimately owned by just a few people. That being said, it didnt take long before somebody offered our office a chance to see the full and actual videotape of Nick Berg, being killed in Iraq. If you arent up on your current events, he was taken prisoner and beheaded in retaliation for our (and I say our because as scary as it is, the world seems to be holding all of us in this country directly responsible for the actions of a few) mistreatment of prisoners in Iraq, an issue which was recently brought to light.
Without spending time on moral issues dealing with whether or not to even watch it in the first place, I did. Im not an idiot, I didnt expect it to be funny or entertaining, and I wish I hadnt watched it. I dont mean to take away from how powerful this video is by using profanity, but it was the most fucked up thing I have ever seen in my life.
There wasnt any Braveheart-esque cinematography, it didnt bring a dramatic end to a well-written story. There were five men in cloaks and hoods, he was kneeling in front of them, and he was terrified. The men give a speech for a few minutes about what they are about to do and why, and then they tackle him. They cut his head off with a knife. Not a guillotine, or an axe, a fucking knife. I cant help but just feel really sad right now. He is from West Chester, PA, just a short distance from where I live. I feel horrible for his family and horrible for this country.
I wouldnt recommend that anyone, if given the opportunity watch this video. Unless of course you are somebody who is indifferent to the things that are going on in this world because you think they do not affect you. Then you should because this guy had nothing to do with torturing prisoners or the military or George Bush. He was a 26-year-old guy who was not allowed to leave Iraq before anti-american sentiment worsened because our FBI was detaining him based on the fact that they, didnt know why he was there.
