I arrived in Berlin yesterday about noon. Went to the hostel to check in but my bed wasn't ready yet, so I dumped my stuff and went out to explore.
First off I have to say that the public transportation is CONFUSING at the beginning. So far I have dealt with 7 different subways in 7 different cities and this one is the most complicated. True, Berlin is a HUGE city, but I'm sure they could've designed it a wee bit easier.
After figuring out how to get where I wanted to go, I was off. My first stop was the Checkpoint Charlie spot, where the Allied troops were based while Berlin was still divided. They have a really cool Checkpoint Charlie Museum that I went to where they explained and showed pictures of many of the escapes through the wall. Some of them were quite inventive.
Next I checked out where Hitler's old bunker was, also the place he commited suicide. All it is, is a big field with no markers. They made it that way so that no one could leave tributes to that horrible piece of filth.
It was back to the hostel by that point, but not before I ate at the Sushi Circle. MMMMMM, it was an all you could eat.
After chillin' at the hostel with a glass of wine, I met some really nice Dutch girls. One of them is dying to go see the Eastside Gallery, which is a 3 mile long piece of the Berlin wall which has murals all over it. It was about sunset and we set off with a guy living in Canada. It was only a 15 minute walk from the hostel and it was cool seeing that. As we were walking and talking, the guy told us that his grandparents were Auschwitz survivors!
Today I have walked exxtensively already and it is only 3pm. I went to the topography of horrors, which was the headquarters where the Holocost was planned. I also saw a bombed out church.
I only hae one other complaint about Berlin. There are bees everywhere. At least four times today while I have walked around, bees have just landed on me. This is not a good situation for me, I just know I will probably get stung. Blah...
Anyways, just wanted to let everyone know that I wasn't in Prague when that greunade was thrown into a public place.
