i just saw a film called Made in Secret: The Story of the East Van Porn Collective.
It was sooo cool. it was about a group (collective if you will) of people who are fed up with hegemonic mainstream porn and so they decide to make their own porn that is only for themselves.
the movie that i saw was sort of a documentry about that. it was very cool and 2 of the people from the movie were there and spoke and they were so articulate.
i love that progressive, feminist forms of pornography are starting to proliferate, it is so validating to know that there are other people out there who don't like that face of mainstream porn today. growing up there was so much tension for me between wanting to find something erotic and not wanting to objectify women, between wanting to get turned on but not wanting to oppress. it is only now that i am starting to see that it is not about pornography being this monolithic black or white entity. it is kind of like the music, music can be awful and prepetuate a culture that i don't like, it can be mainstream and driven by corporate ethics, or it can be ani difranco and sage francis, it can be artisitcally driven, have integrity and push me to think, really it can be anything in between.
years of catholic guilt unraveilng.
now isn't that nice?
