I feel your pain, on the one hand it sucks having no place to go, no people to see, but then I hate crowds and waiting in crowds. Classic catch 22 situation. Long lengths of chat can be unhealthy but they can also help, I was the most shy, withdrawn person I had trouble speaking to people in real life and then I disocered IRC and low and behold, a few people found me funny, that was a slight confidence boost and it enabled me to start talking to people, I'm still withdrawn and if I like a girl, I won't ask her out, but I'll talk to her about pretty much anything else.
Anyway you don't sit around for long periods, usually you have 10-20 mins, then do some chores, or smoke a bowl or cook, you're not lone of those people who sits around for hours and maybe even lets chat eat into their bedtime (me as an example, though I've not been on much lately, damn addictive consoles, I'm writing this now and its 00:52 and I should really have gone to bed at least 22 minutes ago)
