why in the fuck is someone gonna buy an inbred dog for like 500 bucks, then neglect to get it innoculated? now it has parvo, and guess what? they can't afford to pay to treat the puppy, so now it's gonna die. first of all, never, EVER get a puppy and neglect to get it shots. next, it is not very sensible to get a purebred dog, unless you have lots of $$$ because purebred = inbred. purebred dogs are like people who think its OK to do their sisters and cousins. im not saying this is the case for all purebreds, because if you find a good breeder chances are these problems won't be major ones but the chance is always there. purebreds can be genetically predispositioned to having horrible problems. weak immune systems (hence parvo virus), hip displaysia, skin problems, thyroid disease, luxating knee caps, diabetes, adrenal problems (cushing's disease), just to name a few. Not to say that this ONLY affects purebred dogs, but roughly 80% of the dogs who are affected are purebred. mixed breeds tend to have far fewer problems and they can sometimes be smarter and not as hyper -active as say, a labrador. so if anyone cares or is thinking about getting a puppy or dog, PLEASE, PLEASE, GO TO THE ANIMAL SHELTER OR THE POUND!!!! There are soooo many dogs and cats that need homes and you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for them (unlike most purebred dogs), that way you can afford shots and proper medical care. also, most dogs and puppies at the pound or shelter already have some or all of their shots, and the shelters usually have a thing where you can take it to a regular veterinarian and get a free exam. my clinic gives all new pets free exams. pets need to be tested for parasites, and it is a good idea for a new dog to be tested for heartworm disease, unless it's a pup under 6 months, then you can just start it on heartworm prevention. also, if you are still insistent on getting a purebred dog, still, check the pound!!! a lot of purebred dogs are euthanized there every year, not to mention the countless #'s of mixed breeds. that way you could have a purebred and still be rescuing a pet, and you won't have to pay 500 bucks!!! sorry, I just had to get this off my chest. i cant stand irresponsible or ignorant pet owners, and that is what I dealt with this weekend. have a groovy day, MaryJane
