A wee potted guide to some SCOTTISH BANDS I like...
DAWN OF THE REPLICANTS - download 'Science Fiction Freak' or 'Hold The Guillotine' through that there link. Or type "Dawn Replicants Paul Vickers" into your search engine. These are my favourite Scottish band 'cause of their diversity, cuteness, strangeness and Paul Vickers's dreamscape lyrical meanderings. Also, they have a cool girlie in the band called Susi Hypnotique who plays keyboard, clarinet, saxophone, theremin and god only knows what else. They've had three albums out since 1997 and you can usually buy their stuff through those corporate whores at Amazon.
LIFE WITHOUT BUILDINGS
Bah! My search for the Life Without Buildings song I was going to let you hear was in vain. It must've been removed from the net now. They weren't actually Scottish but they formed in art school in Glasgow. They sadly split up recently. To be honest, most of their album was a little samey on first listening but the song 'New Town' is an utter classic. I guess you can still buy it online somehwere (sorry - not very helpful).
THE DELGADOS
The Glasgow based band who run Chemikal Underground records (one time home of Mogwai, Arab Strap and Others). They mine the same terrain as Belle And Sebastian but are much darker and don't have that horrible tweeness about them. I like it when their guitarist, Emma Pollock, sings 'cause she has a cool sex-soaked voice.
MOGWAI
Probably the loudest and quitest instrumental guitar music you'll find. Not sure where their website is but I'm sure you'll find them through the search engines.
ARAB STRAP
Aiden Moffat tells harsh drunken Trainspotting-like modernday Scottish tales while Malcolm Middleton makes cool Mogwai-esque music. (He also did a cool solo album dressed as Crappo The Clown which I prefer to a lot of Arab Strap's stuff.)
