EGADS!
I really don't have much to rant about today... I was going to talk about what I like/dislike about this place but then I thought I'd write about music... Now I just don't know.. I can't rant about my classes because I'd be here all night writing about coding, gui design and JRP's and frankly, I know no one reads my rants to fall asleep to so I dunno.. How does current events sound?
Ok... For those of you not watching the news/papers and non-Winnipeggers, an 18 year old aboriginal boy was shot dead by police last week after a confrontation in which the boy attacked the officer with a screwdriver. The officer, with very few choices left, shot and killed the boy. Now, the boy was being chased because he was caught in the midst of a crime (I'm not 100% on the crime because the papers all focus on the race card now as opposed to actually what happened, but apparently it was violent in nature) and the officer did his job.
Here's where the situation always gets sticky, as it always does. The boy's family, obviously hurt and angry, is crying racism.. They're saying that the police shot the kid because he's aboriginal. That's where the line is crossed. It would be one thing if the kid was jaywalking or shoplifting and the cops shot him, but this kid came at them with a weapon! This sort of thing pisses me off, not because people are being dumb and using such a terrible thing to stir shit up and try to come out ahead. It's disgusting.. I was reading the Sun today and people (aboriginal and metis mostly) wrote in expressing thier support for the officer. Had the boy been a white male there would've been a blurb in the papers the day after and then nothing but because this kid was aboriginal. The First Nations' Chiefs are in an upheavel (I can't spell, shut up ) over the whole thing... Calling for an inquiry into the officer's life and record. It's rediculous.. GAH!
Ok... I can't keep this up any longer.. i'll probably continue my rant tomorrow or something... Either way! post your comments on the subject and if you don't know anyhting about it, see if you can scrounge up some articles on it.. A good place to check would be CBC's website.. a good start at least. Anyways! I shall rant later!
