cross-posted from my website:
I'm watching CBC News with my friend Dieter, so all of my referencing is coming from that.
So the Canadian Governor General allowed spoiled-child Harper to come whining to her and agreed to prorogue parliament. This means that the vote of confidence that was supposed to happen in the House of Commons to hopefully oust the Conservatives won't be happening - parliament is now suspended until the 26th January.
Nobody really seems to be sure at this point what that actually means and how the country will run in the absence of parliament - the general consensus seems to be that Harper still has some powers to exercise, but we're not sure what they are.
Either way, I think it was a poor showing by the GG to allow this to happen. The confidence vote would have given the coalition government a chance to govern - and maybe it wouldn't have worked out, but this is just silly. Harper comes up with a budget that includes, among other ridiculous bullshit, that the public funding for opposition parties should be taken away - effectively amputating his opposition in the House of Commons - and then when the little guys team up to show the bully what's what, he goes running to the Governor General and she lets him suspend parliament.
Sounds familiar - oh yeah, because it sounds like elementary school.
And WOW NO BIG FRICKIN SURPRISE, the Canadian dollar is dropping AGAIN.
