While trick-or-treating last night, one house was passing out some sort of pamphlet or coupons. "Great!" I think. Less candy for the kidlet. We return home and a look at the pamphlet. It's a chick tract, a christian comic book, and the characters are talking about suicide and burning in hell. This was given to my 2 yr old! by a girl who couldn't have been older than 6. Of course, me and my temper stomped back to the house and had a few words. All the mother could say was "But did you finish reading it all?" No, I don't care how the story ends thanks. I ended up throwing the book at her door, and was tempted to camp out in front of her house to ward off other kids/parents.
It's one thing to be completely brainwashed by your religion to think that your god would frown upon little kids collecting candy. (We won't even get into the christians' misconception of the whole basis of Halloween). It's quite another thing to force questions about suicide and hell into my child's head, and cause me to have conversations that I don't feel are age appropriate for him. Thank goodness he isn't old enough to read.
