I was invited to DJ at a friend of mine's party sometime last year at Zanzibar in Pretoria. I jumped at the chance because as everybody knows I will -play at the opening of a chip packet. Her main seeling point was that a band called Kid Of Doom were playing, and I had to see them. Stiffling a yawn I thought... Oh good another bunch of 16 Stitchhead wannabees, shouting a lot cos their lives living with mom and dad are so tough...
So I got to the venue, slightly under the weather for reasons I cant quite recall, and there was already a band on stage, and yep, my worst fears were confirmed... hair everywhere.. angsty shouty boys in shorts on stage... It was going to be a long night...
So I settled in the darkest, quietest corner of the club, prepared to sit it out til it was my turn to play.
Next band started.. It was Kid Of Doom. I turned to Sanet and said they sound quite good lets have a look.. Got to the back of the room and was confronted by a light show that was Pink Floydesque in it's hallucinogenic properties, a drummer that clearly graduated from the Keith moon school of amnia, a guitarist that had riffs that would make the Strokes quit, a bass player who could walk into Spiritualized and a keyboardist with enough beeps and squiggles to make drugs completely unnecessary. So far so good.... Now lets talk about what they sound like....
Pretty much like nothing you have heard before, but better. 4 Minute epics that completely mesmerise. I started out at the back of the room. Next thing I knew I was dancing frantically at the front of the stage. As was everybody else in the room. The energy was electrifying. The tunes were God sent. I was smitten.
By the end of the gig I was clamouring to meet the band, and was already working out in my head which Cellardoor they would be playing at.
At work on Monday I tried to explain to Marc the brilliance I had seen. Either I didnt do a very good job, or Marc was just playing the jaded "heard It all before' music industry type. I was also starting wonder whether I had imagined it all.
Couple weeks later, Kid Of Doom were playing their final gig of the year in Pretoria. I convinced Marc that we had to go. We got there early, took our seats right at the back (too cool eh?) and waited for the band.
The moment they came on i was out of my seat, back down the front of the stage. They were better than before. They blew me away. I was dancing frantically again.
After the gig I went back to the table, looked at Marc and the first thing he said was:
We gotta get them to the Cellardoor.
So we did.
And now it's less than 2 weeks away and I cant sleep.
