Had another go at meeting someone off the internet a couple weeks back, since it worked out so well with Aaraa. A girl named Lacey friended me on Facebook, and she lives a short Metro ride away in the city, so I went out to meet her on Veteran's Day, since we both had off. Total waste of time, turns out. Nice girl, extremely good-looking, but we just did not click at all. She pursued all the wrong lines of conversation (or I did, but since I'm narrating here, let's say she did), and while she seemed to find me attractive initially, I think the longer we sat across from each other in the cafe, the more bored with each other we got. After a bit, she said she was going back to her place nearby to watch a movie, and asked what I was doing. In retrospect, that may have been an invitation, but without thinking I said I was going to browse through the adjacent bookstore. So, I either bored her or jilted her, but whichever, she de-listed me as a friend.
Can't win 'em all, I guess.
Last week was my birthday. My parents came down and took me out to dinner at the Indian place I like down in Silver Spring, and the day after, Lauren cooked me a birthday dinner. I also had my yearly review at work, and they gave me a 15% raise. I honestly cannot figure out how what I do there (which, by and large, is read The Economist) is worth $1500 twice a month, but ok. Apparently I'm "really rising to the challenge." Sure, whatever. I guess I should take the joke about them paying me being an exaggeration out of my profile, though.
This past weekend, Dave, Rick, Jenny and I went to see Casino Royale. Mediocre, but a hell of a step up from previous Bond films. If you've never seen Die Another Day, it is truly an abomination in the sight of the Lord. The script is terrible, and the action scenes are so bizarre as to seem randomly generated. (Ok, we'll have him... drive a rocket car.... on a glacier.... while being chased by a space laser!) The new film fixes a lot of that. The writing is actually snappy most of the time, and the action sequences are exciting but not ludicrous. Also, Eva Green is heart-breakingly gorgeous. Everyone is encouraged to go find The Dreamers so you can all watch her sex scene.
While we were out, it came up that a) I generally do not consume alcohol, and b) consequently I'd never been out to Georgetown (which, having the eponymous university, is also full of bars). So, they resolved to take me out Saturday evening, at their expense if I'd agree to get drunk. Everyone gets at least one chance to see that, I suppose, so I went along. Jenny didn't make it because she was on call at the hospital, but Matt came along, and his girlfriend Sarah is back from grad school for the holiday. So, we had a decent evening out. I don't think Georgetown is anything particularly special. I certainly didn't see the legions of attractive girls I was promised. Also, I ended up still drunk the next morning because Sarah talked me into ending the night with shots of tequila. (For the record, Sarah is a cute little Asian girl, and for some reason that the only sort of person from whom peer pressure works on me. I don't know why.) The moral of that story is that this is precisely why I don't go drinking very often, but it's fun once in a while.
....and now, holiday season! Which I loathe, incidentally, but at least there's stuff going on to keep me entertained.
