There are 5 guys sitting on a step near the side of the street, and 5 pipes on their push carts. I see this scene replayed every few days, and it always brings to mind the Myth of Sisyphus. The pipes are steel, and I'm estimating them at 250kg each. I've walked this neighborhood, and neither the point of departure nor the destination are discernably close to this intersection, so I'm guessing their journey is on the order of kilometers.

Their fate, raw labor, in endless repitition, to earn enough to eat. Like most people I meet here, they are probably generally happy, and that is always an important lesson for me.

Addendum to notes from the road:

The often baffling custom here is for one's driver to stop the car as close as possible to the front door of the building you will enter. Today, the driver pulls up to a hotel, and stops the car about 500mm from an electrically driven revolving door. I watch, then open the car door to coincide with the rotation of the revolving door, get out and close the car door immdediately. The guy behind me also decides to get out on the hotel side, but is oblivious to the revolving door. I just watch as the revolving door attempts to remove the car door. At a certain point of force, the electric door does actually sense that it has hit an immoveable object, and stops; damage to the car is just a scuff mark on the leather arm rest. I can pretty much guarantee that the driver will create the same situation again, on another day, because that is the custom and his job.

coretic:
I guess the rain adds to the drama of the battlefield scenes. I just watched Apocalypse Now:
This is my Camera
There are many like it, but this one is mine
My Camera is my best friend
It is my life
I must master it as i must master my life
Without me my Camera is useless
Without my Camera i am useless
I am married to this machine of metal and glass
And i will be faithful
I must pull focus true
I must keep my equipment in good shape
I must keep the gate clean
I will
Before god i swear this creed
My DoP and myself are defenders of asthetics
We are the masters of the picture
We are the saviours of this shooting
So be it
Until there is no shooting but wrap
Amen.

Sisyphus indeed
and to many the difference in the way we sell our souls ( mine anyway) by sitting inside a building of glass and steel in a city of concrete and asphalt must seem equally mystifying.
Yet how many can claim happiness amidst the passing and goings of our day?
How many readily admit and share their satisfaction of what they have to offer?
I feel like I am just getting there and enjoying the roll down the hill.
The push has been long and not without ardor but the air passing by as my rock tumbles is refreshing and sweet to notice.
Thanks for sharing the vivid accounts of your travels.
Its a welcome window
Cheers and thanks for remembering my b-day!
You are more considerate than all the Blokes I once called Beaus.
Seems as though none of them were/are able to remember it.
Whats up with that?!
I think it says more about me unfortunately.
Time to make better choices I say.
So I hope you have a happy one and treat yourself to what makes you happy.
Enjoy
