Faculty members at my university are allowed to take one class per semester free of charge. I decided to take advantage of that and take something I've wanted to for quite a while.

Spanish.

I've always been somewhat of a language nut. I speak German pretty fluently and quite a few other languages poorly. And I'm always looking to expand my vocabulary.

Anyway, so far,...

All you really have to know is how to ask for a ticket to the football game on Sunday - everything else on the trip is bonus!

I finally got a change to see The Aristocrats. I wasn't real sure what to expect (well, I know about the joke and all that stuff), but for the most part I enjoyed it. It's interesting to me how each of the comedians put a little bit of themselves in the joke, while the jist of it stays the same.

And seeing Bob Saget go...

Thanks to everyone for all the birthday wishes. As I told most of you individually, it feels nice to have so many folks who care about you, even it it's from a distance. But SG folks are a friendly sort, so I expect no less.

Odds and ends today:

I've got a couple of old friends from Alabama and Georgia visiting me this weekend. It's good to have some old, familiar faces here. To be perfectly honest, a majority of our weekend has been spent...

School starts back up tomorrow. Alas, my four-week holiday is over. I'm ready to go back, however. Too much idle time at home means too much Football Manager 2006, which, in the grand scheme of things, is a bad idea. But oh, how I love that game. It's caused a few divorces over the pond, from what I've read. Check in with pravon and...

rock. my pleasure.
I was gonna bring country ham and biscuits as well, though I'm glad I didn't. I would've been cooking all night!

Yeah, we should totally rock South of the Border soon. I've had a hankerin' to pay to use the restroom lately. and I <3 fireworks.

It shames me to say this, and it it by no means easy, but my father has turned into a bitter, cranky old man. And not in a funny way.

We got back from Texas today and I couldn't have gotten home quicker.

Now, to preface all of this, my dad has always been a little high strung. He's always been a complainer. He's always...

No, it wasn't televised here. Everyone roots for the underdog: as nice as it was to se Liverpool go 5-3 yesterday, it was an unbelievable match with the prospect that Liverpool were going to suffer totally at the hands of Luton.

My dad's getting the same way lately. His frustration with the world got so bad he had a heart attack.
It sound like your dad is SERIOUSLY depressed. They should put him on Effexor or Paxil or something. Effexor has helped my dad quite a bit. Not to mention me. Both me and my dad have been told we're "Happy Angry People." And I feel like that's pretty accurate. I enjoy bitching and moaning to a certain extent, and being pissed off feels better than being sad, which brings us back around to the depression thing. I dunno, food for thought. I hope he gets the help he needs. Hang in there for him.

Christmas went well this year, although we've got one more to go. I piled in lots of loot--mostly books, music, and movies, but that's OK. My want lists are pretty small these days.

Lessee...the booty pile includes

Jamiroquai--Dynamite
Alanis Morrisette's greatest hits CD
Batman Begins
Volume 4 of Batman the Animated Series
A set of noise-reducing headphones
a nifty Vanderbilt baseball jersey

and a few...

More tomorrow after a long night's sleep.

Eww... Miller Light! I stooped to the level of Yuengling for bowling, but that's about as far as I'll go. It was a small affair, but I'll plan an SG event of it soonish. Lemme know when is good for you and I can plan it out.

Hope your trip was good.

Well the time has come again to trapse across the country to visit various and sundry relatives for the holidays.

Pravon and I leave tomorrow morning for the beautiful vacation paradise of Huntsville, Alabama for four exciting nights with the wife's family. There, we'll spend about 30 minutes with her brother and his wife before they find an excuse to leave. After that, we'll set...

I'm curious what everyone things about this whole "should or should we not use the word 'Christmas' during this time of year debate.

I will admit that I am guilty of omiting the word on occasion--particularly in class. On the day of the final exam, as my students were turning in their tests, I consciously wished everyone a 'Happy Holidays," purposely excluding the word "Christmas"...

mat8drb:
There's not much of a trend over here to omit the word "Christmas" in speech, but local councils have in the past not allowed schools to hold nativities, and put up "Happy Eid" as well as the Christmas lights, or not put up "Merry Xmas" at al.

I think that Christmas is now seperated so much from the traditional meaning that it should no longer be an issue.
littlefierceone:

SAMANTHA BEE [video clip]: Christmas: It's the only religious holiday that's also a federal holiday. That way, Christians can go to their services and everyone else can stay home and reflect on the true meaning of separation of church and state.

mad yeeeeeah… "The War on Christmas" [snort!] Because it's SO obvious that the Muslims and Pagans are taking over this country. And because, y'know, the consumerist zombies have finally come to their senses and corporate America has finally realized that Christmas is not all about the Benjamins…

I agree that if one is referring specifically to Christian elements, then "Christmas" is the word to use, as much as one should wish someone a good Ramadan or Hannuka or Kwanzaa or Solstice or whatever, and that "holiday" or "season" should be used in the ambiguous. But if the fucktards stirring the pot on this issue actually believe that we don't live in a virtual theocracy, then they are truly intolerant indeed.

Religion is evil.

Feeling better today...thanks for all the kind words, everyone. I know you're only as old as you feel, and I feel pretty darn young, but I am fascinated with mortality at times.

Anyways, I had a swell SG day yesterday--I broke the record for most comments on any post of mine (sad, isn't it?), saw a naughty pic of Frost and livingoutloud, and met...
