And now ladies and gents, the saga of BJ Tolliver.
Growing up, I never had an NES or SNES, I had the Sega Master System and Genesis instead. Great consoles, but I missed alot of Nintendo only titles, including the greatest football game of all time, Tecmo Super Bowl.
Fast forward to pharmacy school. My best friend has his old NES, and the damn thing still works. He introduces me to Tecmo. Now bear in mind this game is set for the 90 or 91 season of the NFL, I was 9 at at the time so I had no idea which team was good or which team was bad. So I randomly pic a team for the first game. I picked the San Diego Chargers.
At the time, the charge had a excellent running game with the star players being Marion Butts and Early. Their QB however, is simply the worst QB in the game. I've gone games where I've had 0 completions, 20 attempts, 2 fumbles, and six interceptions. The name of the QB was Billie Joe Tolliver, a hot prospect at the time who in reality didn't do shit. As a result, playing as the charges basically means an all running game all the time offense, broken up with a few short passes you'll just pray aren't intercepted. No one in their right mind would pick the Chargers to play ass, ever. It's just too painful.
Except me. For some ungodly reason, the team sort of grew on me, and I always play as the Chargers. It was the first team I picked, and I stuck with it. Alot can be inferred regarding my personality based on this choice. I make BJ work for me, and I've even taken down the best team in that game, the Raiders, playing as the Chargers. I don't always win, but it's always a tight game and a hell of a fight.
Sidetrack: When I started school, we went on a boat cruise where everyone brought flasks along with them so they wouldn't have to pay the obscenely high prices for the drinks. I was flaskless and sad and broke. My friends made me promise not to by myself a flask, because they swore it was bad luck to do so.
Tie in to the main story: For my birthday this year, my friends chipped in and bought me a flask, and "BJ Tolliver" was engraved on the side. It was a moment that was oddly poignant and only made a sense amongst my close friends, and was rather touching.
I still play as the Chargers, and the flask will soon be christened with the proper liquor.
