I looked at Ratso carefully. In the neon incandescence of Little Italy his face reflected all the pain of a momentary mask of Greek tragedy.

I glanced briefly at the happy people sitting inside the little caf. I puffed on the cigar and watched the smoke curl up past the street lamp and vanish in the lights of the city.
