Been a while since I've done one of these. Might as well talk about my last concert outing. This last Tuesday I went to Club Mardi Gras to see Dismantled. I had been on the fence about going. I was stupidly concerned about how much the crowd would suck. The show was 21+, and the three I had been to here didn't have the best of turnouts (the first had somewhere between 14-20 people, the second had 6, and the third had about 20-25). So I was thinking the place would either be dead, or that it would be packed with poser douchebags. I was kind of right on both fronts, but more on that later.
Apoptygma Berzerk was the headliner, and The Antix, Ikonoklast, and Dismantled were the supporting acts. As I said earlier, I just wanted to see Dismantled. I had never heard of The Antix and had been aware of Apop for a while but never bothered giving them a listen. I have actually seen Ikonoklast a number of times, but I'm not terribly fond of them. They always wind up playing with other bands I like.
The Antix kicked off the show. They were actually pretty good. They did a bad ass cover of Filter's "Hey Man Nice Shot." Despite not really caring for Ikonoklast, I must admit, they sounded really good this time. I figure whoever does the sound usually does a shitty job of mixing their stuff, but the one at this place was on it. Now I'd like to say that Dismantled came out and tore the place down, but this wasn't that kind of show. Their set was still really fucking good, though. I just wish it were longer.
Now, back to the crowd. The place actually was packed, but not by poser douchebags. However, this was by far the least energetic and seemingly uninterested crowd I have ever seen. Everyone largely just stood in place for the opening acts, which is mostly understandable. I figured they were just there to see Apop. Then they come out and everyone still just stands there. People would clap and cheer after a song, and then go dead again. I could not comprehend this. I could understand people doing this if they just wanted to just take it easy and hang out in back, but damn near everyone from front and center of the stage all the way back were just statues. I'm not sure if I could blame the performance. I couldn't get into them, but I'm not really into their style of music. They didn't sound bad from a technical standpoint, but they're just not my thing. However, all these people were there for them, and still didn't seem to care.
All things considered, it was a good show overall. For me, the opening acts were the main selling point. Hopefully Dismantled will be the headliner the next time they come around.
