I'm not so sure about this whole blogging thing, but here goes. This might be a long one. All great passions are...
The last blog I had was a Xanga in high school (god, I feel old!) that was mostly filled with the lyrics to my latest obsession song (which is exactly what it sounds like- a song I get completely obsessed with and will listen to on repeat for up to weeks, before finding a new one) or whatever song expressed how I was feeling, at the time. I've always been drawn to music. I made my mom petition my grammar school choir director to let me join two years before the minimum age, because I just HAD to sing. I was in choirs for the next ~10 years. The only reason I stopped was my college director not being what I was looking for. I still sing, any chance I get, though. The funny part? I'm TERRIFIED of singing in front of people by myself.
I truly believe music is the language of the soul. It's utterly incredible how instinctual and ingrained in us it is. I read an article years ago that talked about how our mother's heartbeat is the first sound we hear. A perfect and absolutely beautiful rhythm. We are literally *born* to love music. Even those who are born without their hearing can literally *feel* music. There is no way for me to separate emotions from music. Every song makes me feel *something*, and almost every single person and major event in my life has a song that will ALWAYS remind me of them/it.
My own tastes in music are HIGHLY varied, covering everything from Bon Iver(whose voice is one of the most soothing things I've ever heard) to Snoop Dogg, Metallica(a personal favorite) to Sarah McLaughlin, and Fall Out Boy to The Eagles...you get the point. If it has a good beat and lyrics, without any screaming(one of the very few things I *won't* listen to), I'm there. There is just such a grand scope of human emotion that I feel there is music to express exactly what you're feeling, as long as you're open minded and willing to look.
Currently, I have two obsession songs that are definitely worth the listen:
Enjoy! :-)
