There are two people in this area that dress up as jesus carrying the cross. One is doing it as part of his "mission," the process of becoming a minister in the church he belongs to. The purpose of the experience was to immerse the participant in the ostracism (for lack of a better word) that Christ was subjected to. It acheives this by having the participant dress in a bloody robe (sheet) and stand on the roadside with a large cross. The point of this seems lost, since Christ's ostracism was caused by political and spiritual actions/ideas, and the ostracism of the modern participant is caused by the fact that they are dressed in a bloody sheet and are standing on the roadside with a large cross. Granted, its not an entirly cosmetic exercise, but it seems at least intellectually vain, and at most *incredibly* blasphemous to so strongly liken one's self to Christ.
People (ie christians) seem to spend too much of their spiritual energy focusing on the death of Christ, and not so much on the life. In the jesus myth, it is primarily the birth and death episodes that signify his divinity, which may explain this undue attention.
Even without "divinity," Christ is a respectable social/spiritual figure, and it is this fact which gets utterly lost when people (ie christians) focus so narrowly so often.
As for my relation to Christ?
To paraphrase from "hedwig and the angry inch:"
I don't "know" him, but i love his work.
or, like i've said for years: jesus to me is a lot like the grateful dead, i like them a lot, its their fans i hate.
