I just got back to New Orleans last Friday. It is very surreal. A lot of stuff is up and running, and "normal". But its the little things that make it so strange. My area got no water, and my house made it with nothing but a broken window. But the house across the street, the one they just finished fixing up, is gone. Two houses around the corner burned down, and three houses one more block down did as well. We're very lucky that the fire didn't spread farther, considering there was no running water of any kind at that time. There are military vehicles everywhere. There were a few National Guardsmen out the other day chatting to the neighborhood drug dealer while holding up their machine guns. The further north you get, the less there is. The flood lines on the houses, the giant piles of debris, the spray paint telling workers if there were any bodies in the buildings and houses.
I love my city, and it is coming back to life, but I don't think it will ever be the same.
