Hi I'm lyfeforce. I'm addicted to Bondage
You: "......."
Me: Bondage is my ipod. Go ahead, ask why.
Music has always been a lifeblood to me. Ever since my parents gave me a walkman and Areosmith's Get a Grip on Cassette i've been bouncing around ever since.
I always gravitated toward Hard Rock and Metal. I'm an angry white suburban kid. Fuck Your Scene and Kiss My Ass. Of course, back then hard rock was Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Pumpkins and Metal was.... jeez... anywhere from Poison to Metallica to "Smells Like Children"-era Marilyn Manson. Yeah, Poison. I said it. Suburban White Kid remember? Fuck Your Scene and Kiss My Ass. I also like Whitesnake, what are you gonna do?
Nowadays it's pretty hard to classify Metal and Hard Rock. HIM, Cradle of Filth, Devildriver, Nashville Pussy, My Chemical Romance, Thrice, Muse, 69 Eyes, Chimera, Lacuna Coil, Killswitch Engage, it can all clump into it all at one point or the other. Throw today's loosely defined punk rock into the mix and you can get lost. Bad Religion, Iggy Pop, FEAR and anything Henry Rollins is punk rock, but so is Story of the Year, Sugarcult and Unwritten Law? It's immediately the most confusing and interesting part of punk for me. Yes i do think Blink 182 is still punk and like them alot. Fuck Your Scene and Kiss My Ass
I discovered hip hop (and yes I do mean discovered because Hip Hop and I are just about the same age and didn't hit the 'burbs until '88 around my way) around the the time the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff were just ending their run as the best in the world. Funny thing since I can take the train now and almost walk to his old house. "Summertime" is everything I love about pre-gangsta hip-hop. A story is told and a scene is created while enticing you rhythmically (even though i can't dance. Need I remind you why?). Now I tread through Hip-hop waters lightly and cautiously because there's so much of it that makes me sick. G-Unit? Diddy? No better way to make me lose my lunch one way or the other than putting those on my speakers. I'm just outside of philly. If you know hip-hop, you have an idea of who I listen to, Okayplayer? Thanks to SG, I'm learning about Def Jux as well. That and whoever akira sends my way. Mature Suburban White Boy's Theory of music #2: The best way to learn about new music is through the friends you trust.
Side note: mercie also has some kickass taste in music too. If you still agree with me about music after this entry you should check out who she's listening to these days.
Electronic music caught me the same way it caught everyone else: Prodigy's Firestarter and the Crystal Method. From there on in.... I was on my own. A first for me when it came to music. No MTV to put suggestions in my head, nobody who knew about it, no internet in the house yet to check boards and playlists. I figured it out though. Aphex Twin and Squarepusher and the Mushroom Jazz series (vol. 2 w/ Mark Farina is an essential). And of course Lords of Acid too. Thanks to DDR i'm also getting a dose of Jpop and... y'know what? DDR is its own genre. never mind.
Since MTV is on the brain, When I was young, I was afraid of MTV. The MTV Slates always scared me. Strange now that I'm afraid of MTV now for all the right reasons.
I dont have a favorite band, nor a favorite genre. If there's anything that can count as an artist/group I'm enthusiastic about, it's U2 and RJD2. And Irish Drinking Music.
Country? Sure, why the hell not? Patsy Cline, Hank Willams, MR. Johnny Cash? Please! This stuff is as standard as Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen (even though I cant stand Springsteen). Garth Brooks? ok. Tim McGraw? a little too mainstream for me these days but sure. Dixie Chicks? nah. like their stand on politics though. I like country, not a lot but some. Don't like it? I'm sure you know what to Fuck and where to Kiss by now.
Classical is something of a mystery to me. I'm untrained in the art of music reading and probably couldn't tell you an A# Arpeggio from a Domino's Meat Lovers. But it's undeniable the effect classical has on me. it's one of the few types of music I can count on to get a big emotional reaction out of me.
Thank God for Ipods. I was going to kill myself one of these days with my five books of CD's and changing discs while driving. I'm up to about 1340 songs inside Bondage and showing no signs of stopping. Nothing like having all your discs on one thing that's smaller than my wallet. It really is more than a music storage depot and organizer, it can change the way you think about music. Think I'm overdramatic? Well....
....Surburban White Boy's Theory of Music #1: FUCK YOUR SCENE AND KISS MY ASS.
I'll expand on this if i get the energy. I just got the new Gorillas album and I'm going to liquify my brain with Bondage with Demon Days as the soundtrack.

fucking awesome! Never appologize for your taste in music. That said, i have some new stuff to send your way you may be interested in. Best way to describe it is "Death Rap". Think Death Metal but with a rhythmic baseline and horror movie samples If you're interested, here are some album covers:
