So I have now been two days on the job. I have been enjoying it, but it is frustrating that I can communicate with the kids very well. I've already picked up a handful of signs, but they are mostly the important command ones for being a teacher: Sit, Stop, Good, Thank you, Lower your voices, ect.
There are eight children in the class, and a ninth who stays in the regular classes since his hearing and language is very good.
There is "E like a Lion" (this is his sign name, since I don't want to give out actual names on the net). He is very sweet but bounces all over the place, he also loves Spiderman.
"H on the chin" has the best language and she is the tallest child, but she is overly concerned with what everyone else is doing wrong and tries to tell on them or force them to do it properly, which never works.
"A on the head" is fairly mild mannered, sam lack of focus that everyone else has, but he hasn't made a huge impression on me.
"K against the cheek" I only met yesterday since she wasn't at school the first day I was there. She is a ball of energy, which is common, but she is constantly smiling, and so far hasn't shown me a bad mood.
"S from heart to hip" is the least focused of them all. She seems to be very shy when it comes to her work, and is always looking for help from the other students. I think if we can get her language up she would be better behaved.
"J to E" has the least vocal language, he usually doesn't try and speak in words, and only uses signs, but he is also one of the better students. Since I sit with him after school everyday until his mother picks him up I have to try and keep him amused with limited conversation. He wants to be Batman for Halloween.
"N down the cheek" Seems like a sweet girl, but she is one of the children that doesn't seem to understand that I don't know sign language yet. She'll come up to me and sign and I just have to tell her that I don't understand. Hopefully that will start changing soon.
"L on the head" is the last one. I only met him yesterday as well, but he has been very well behaved and participated the most in PE.
Yesterday I had to actually attend PE with the children, and that meant that I had to act out all the commands given by the PE teachers so they would know what to do. I was not impressed by the PE teachers at all, both ladies were over weight and all they had the kids do was stand in a hot gym and do exercises in place, a fun time was had by none. I remember looking forward to PE when I was that young, it was like a structured recess.
I also spent some time in Ms.L's class. She is the Pre-K Deaf ed teacher. She impressed the heck out of me, and I'm jealous of her class room. Her room is very well put together with everything set up in a Montessori style. She is bright and perky and signs everything to the children. This is only her first year teaching and she already comes off as an old hand at it. I found myself growing a crush on her because of how well she treats and handles the kids... It doesn't hurt that she is very cute as well.

I love the idea of a mix CD exchange.
