I just read chapter 5 to the end of Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, waiting to renew my license...I about went nuts. Babies with 4 hour old stinky diapers abounded, I was surrounded by people who don't seem to shower, even for a license photo, and this girl in a thong in front of me with her cheeks bubbling out of her jeans. She knew I was looking, but they just seemed ouf of place in that arid room.
Time crawled, personified itself - laughed at me - turned back into its untangible thing, and seemed to crawl backwards. I just watched this manic lady talk to the voices in her head and one of the babies, before she laughed at her own jokes which she wasn't speaking out loud, she'd just mumble them to the ghost to the left and right of her.
We were all going insane. People kept a grip on reality with their cell phones + their novels.
