Did I tell you I hate the new format?
I spent last week at MDA camp as a counselor. It was undoubtedly one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The other volunteers are such generous, compassionate and inspiring people, but the kids were truly the highlight of camp. My little guy has spinal muscular atrophy, type 2 (SMA-2). He is in a power chair and pretty much immobile, with the exception of some arm/hand movement. He had a spinal fusion last year so he can sit on his own for a little while. He is 10 years old and into Yugi-oh, Bionicles and robotics. He had a crush on one of the little girls, who also has SMA-2. He is such a smart kid, too! The pool was his favorite activity, as is the case with most of the kids since the water gives them a degree of freedom of movement they don't otherwise have.
Talk about putting life into perspective!!! It was exactly what I needed this summer. I will see my little guy again at the Labor Day Telethon; I can hardly wait!
I can't decide who gets more out of camp, the kids or the counselors. I will move heaven and earth to do this again next year, and probably every year for the rest of my life... Next time I will train though. Dead-lifting a 100-pound kid in an awkward position multiple times a day, then running around from dawn 'til dusk defnitely took its toll on the luckyP!
