MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Verizon Wireless is moving about 850 jobs from its Morris Township customer service center to North Carolina.
With North Carolina offering Verizon Wireless a $10 million incentive to move, the offer was too good to turn down, company spokesman David Samberg said Thursday.
"It's a strong labor market, and the state offered us a good deal," Samberg said. "The reality is New Jersey is not that great of a place to do business.
Bedminster-based Verizon Wireless is opening a new call center in Wilmington, N.C., that will have about 1,200 jobs. Another call center in the South, its location unannounced, will have about 1,000 jobs.
New Jersey State Treasurer John McCormac on Wednesday defended the state's record of retaining jobs, noting that 25,000 new jobs were added in the Garden State last year.
In addition to the 850 jobs lost in Morris Township, Verizon Wireless is also pulling about 850 call center jobs from its Orangeburg, N.Y., facility.
The Morris Township center will be closed next year. The Orangeburg facility will be expanded to make more room for the company's information technology operations.
Employees in good standing in Morris Township and Orangeburg each will receive a $10,000 incentive if they wish to move to North Carolina to work, Samberg said.
New Jersey and New York employees will also be able to keep their present salaries if they move.

THERE GOES MY JOB
Nice to see reporters knew the same day we did! The Orangeburg call center had employee riots!!! So, right before we heard the supervisors were going into a meeting, to tell us if "rumors" were real. Police, ambulance, fire trucks, & MAD AMOUNTS of security showed up! It was pretty uncomfortable. I hope nobody goes postal. I'm just glad they gave us the rest of the year to find a new job.
