It's an abnormally beautiful day even by the standards of my own clime. I'm thinking about seasons.
In the first days of summer, I find something internal that I didn't know was missing. When I moved out to California I thought that was abandoning the seasons to live in a full time mild summer. This is certainly untrue. California removes the obvious and superficial demarcation of seasons and forces you to consider the more subtle points. It's seasons are shorter and intertwined. Ski season. The rainy season. Poppy, lupine, artichoke and asparagus season. Cookout season. Grass season. Butterflies. Boats and tomatoes. Canada geese. Football season.
That's just a few. I realize that every wildflower has its own season in my mind that may be more properly identified with a feeling than with a time or a place. There is nowhere else I'd rather be right now. You can take that in any sense you wish.
