A University of Chicago graduate student from Senegal walking to his off-campus apartment was shot and killed overnight in what officials said was one of several violent incidents in the area.
Police increased campus patrols after Amadou Cisse, 28, was fatally shot around 1:30 a.m. on the street outside his home in the 6100 block of South Ellis Avenue, school officials said.
U. of C. President Robert Zimmer said in a statement that there were two other incidents on or near campus early this morning in addition to the fatal shooting.
At 12:33 a.m., a university staff member was chased by a gunman who fired at him in the 6000 block of Woodlawn Avenue. About 45 minutes later, two female students were robbed in the 900 block of East 57th Street, he said. No one was injured.
The incidents occurred within several blocks of one another and within an hour's time. Police are investigating whether the incidents are related.
Cisse, who was completing his PhD in chemistry, was walking to his home when a gunman approached, police said.
Witnesses said they heard gunshots, looked out and saw Cisse on the ground. They reported seeing a "dark-colored" car near the scene, police Detective David Fietko said, but no further description was given. He said that he didn't know if Cisse was robbed, and that detectives are still in the area investigating.
"At this point, we don't know if they were connected," Fietko said of the shooting and robbery that occurred nearby.
Cisse graduated in 2001 from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, with a bachelor of sciences degree in physics and chemistry, according to Bryan McNulty, the college's director of communications.
Friend and former classmate Tonya Taylor, 27, said Cisse came to the U.S. from Senegal about 10 years ago to attend high school in Oklahoma.
Cisse's research area was atomic oxygen erosion, and he had just defended his dissertation last week, Taylor said.
University spokeswoman Julie Peterson said Cisse successfully defended his dissertation and was scheduled to receive his doctorate on Dec. 7.
"We are saddened and outraged by this terrible event, and our hearts go out to the student's family, friends, colleagues and neighbors," Zimmer said.
Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call police at 312-747-8272 .
