Tonight we ran out and got some sushi, once again from Mikimoto. We got hold of Matt, who agreed to meet us since he couldn't get his laundry done anyway, and we got hold of Robin, who I haven't seen in way too long. After dinner, we went back to her place and hung out for a bit, which was nice. While talking, I got a very clear sense of the length of time since we sat in the same room, talking face to face. Two years feels like a short time in one sense, but it still has a ring of a long time. In any case, it was nice to be back, among friends, in our city, at our restaurant. I do still miss Vancouver for a number of reasons, but New Orleans as a feeling of home and roots that I can't shake, even though I didn't grow up in the city proper. I think I could get the same in San Francisco, but Vancouver was different. It felt welcoming, offering a large number of conveniences and niceties, a very clean face. In Vancouver, I felt like I belonged, but I didn't quite feel at home. Vancouver just doesn't seem to have as much personality or substance as New Orleans.
Regardless, it's good to be back, and in the back of my mind, I'm still looking forward to moving back to the West coast after I finish my PhD.
