I've gone out with the same guy a few times now, and I'm rather starting to like him. The age difference is more than I've done before-- he's 12 years older-- but I think it's good. He has a better idea of what he wants out of life than most of the guys I've dated who are closer to my age. And it's fun being...

I think you have the right attitude about the person you're seeing. I'm in a somewhat similar situation. Things are good so far so I'm trying not to project too much into the future.

It seems like you're trying to do the same. I sincerely hope this works out for you.

I left my Ph.D. program. Not officially yet, but I told my advisor I was leaving, and from here it's just formalities. I'll finish teaching this semester, and then I'll be free.

What's next? I can add hours at my ESL job, and I can adjunct. I'll probably go for TESOL certification and stay with that path. Maybe go work in another country. Or I've...

ooooh... dissillusioned grad student! We should be friends!

Yeah both my husband and I are; he llikes his research, I switched to a course-based program to escape mine. My sister-in-law recently had a disaster with her anthropolgy PhD. We're a fun bunch at Sunday dinners.

Everyone calls my new boss "Mama," which I find hilarious.

Anyway, at the beginning of last night, she told me she might be putting my friend and I on call, meaning we won't be guaranteed nights every week. That would suck. However, I did very well at the club last night, having a room of guys ask specifically for me and then requesting to take...

That does sound like a pretty fantastic evening. Hope she sees how valuable you obviously are and doesn't do anything stupid. (Like putting you on call)

I'm worried my friend and I will get fired from our hostessing gigs because of the stigma against tattoos in Japanese culture. Oh well. It will all get figured out somehow.

I left my incredibly inconvenient tutoring job, and I'm glad I did that regardless of what happens with the hostess club.

I'm also thinking of leaving my Ph.D. program, and I'm going to talk...

Cover them with makeup. I saw a documentary once about tattoos in Japan...they spoke to a school principal who had his whole body covered in ink. He spent the better part of every morning covering them up, but no one ever hassled him.
wsoxfan:
No sense worrying about something you have no control of referring to the tattoos.

Definitely speak to your advisor. This sounds like a big step and should have a lot of thought put into your decision. I know you'll ultimately do what's best for you.

I have now worked at the hostess club twice and talked mostly with three customers. One wanted to tell me how much he hates Japanese culture, one wanted me to sit next to him and then ignore me, and one was one of my ESL students. This job will prove to be very interesting.

If any of you lives in or travels to NYC and...

Forget about doing it in New York for hundreds of dollars... Do it in Portland for hundreds of cents. I can afford hundreds of cents. blackeyed

I'd love to see what goes on there! but hundreds of dollars, no way. I'll just have to be content with your reports and the dictionary definition of "decadence" instead of the living exhibit you're inhabiting.

Congrats to my foreign student who 1) has sufficiently mastered the English language to tell a dick joke, and 2) managed to use that joke as a witty come on. You won my respect, sir, and very nearly my heart.

A dick joke? You must be so proud, lol.

We're up to four inappropriate sexual opportunities. Two will make things weird at one job. One will make things weird at another job. One will make things weird at the dojang. I think I'll resist temptation to avoid the drama.

I think you have more will power than I would have at this stage of my life.

Sounds like you have your priorities in order.

I would've been happy with at least one inappropriate sexual opportunity this weekend

I'm bored. I have two inappropriate sexual opportunities, and I may take them both.

Inappropriate and sexual opportunities in the same sentence? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Life is short. Enjoy it to the fullest.

at the same time?

A colleague of an ex mentioned knowing that I "used to be good friends with him." Makes me miss him. But if my best relationship was with someone who was married and left the country, that's sad.
ferretbite:
At least there was something to be missed, love

Snickerdoodles are awesome. There is this cookie place called "Cookies by design" which is about a half hour away from me. And they make them BIG. They are so chewy and have all the right spices. It's always worth the trip.

I had a game night last night with some old friends. We played Balderdash, which, if you've never played, you should know is the best word game ever. Here are some descriptions of movies I came up with. I hope you'll be amused. These are real movie titles; the plots, however, are my invention.

Reuben and Ed- Uptight Reuben begins his first semester at...

I know that word. From a movie. A guy who looked like a cricket used it then a bee with glasses described him as unpleasant.

Yes, I'm going to be vague.

I was talking to a couple of friends tonight about something that's been on my mind, bothering me for a while. It's something I often talk about with these friends, because they're close friends and they know the situation well. One of my friends said, "Oh, here she goes again," when I brought up the subject.

Ouch. She can...

That was callous and dismissive of her. Not the kind of reaction you need or expect from someone close to you.
