Today is H--'s birthday. I was glad I was on Skype with him when it hit midnight in Japan so that I could be the first to wish him a happy birthday. He said he was glad too, and he had all his early birthday presents that I sent him by his side.

It's also Japan Day. So we had a lot of memories today....

This is such a beautiful blog. I hope the two of you are together again very soon.
wsoxfan:
Thank you. You deserve only the best.

Thanks for the well-wishes, you guys.

Good news: I have an appointment with a doctor from the Hospital for Special Surgery next week. I mean, better news would have been that I found a time machine and avoided hurting my knee in the first place. But good news will have to do.

the good thing about knee surgery, you will be back on your feet in no time. knee surgery always want you up and about right away.
wsoxfan:
Hope you make a quick and full recovery.

Thanks for the good wishes. I'll be combining wholesomeness with depravity. It will hopefully be a win-win situatuion.

I guess this office temp job isn't totally sucking my soul, but I must say it makes me appreciate my ESL teaching job. I'm glad I'll be able to do that full time once the temp job is over, and I'm happy it's what I'll be doing in Japan. I don't think I'm nearly as good at anything else as I am at teaching, and...

I understand how you feel about teaching. Both of my daughters are teachers. They both love it and are really fulfilled.
wsoxfan:
My older daughter teaches second grade and my younger one is a first grade teacher. My older one was runner-up (along with 6 others) for "teacher of the year" in 2003 when she lived in Florida.

That was especially awesome, since she was only a third-year teacher, while the other finalists had been teaching at least 15 years.

I told my boss I got a temp job for the next 2-3 months and need to reduce my hours at the ESL school a lot because I don't get enough money there. And he said that, after the 2-3 month assignment ends, he would like to give me a raise and have me work full time. I'm pretty happy about this. Teaching is what...

That's great news. It's nice to be well thought of. Of course that's easy to do where you're concerned.

This week I went to a temp agency my mom set me up with, and now they already have an assignment for me for the next 2-3 months. It's as an administrative assistant at an educational travel school. It means I will have to significantly reduce my hours at the Japanese school, although I don't want to leave completely.

I wrote my boss an email...

I spent some time today talking to H-- about trust, and I decided I don't want to do anything I would be the least bit uncomfortable telling him about. If the friend I'm having dinner with is looking for something romantic, and I think maybe he is, I hope I can avoid total awkwardness with him. Unfortunately, I think I might have to start hanging...

Here's a general update about everything.

I'm happy because my knee is gaining some strength back. I still can't jump beyond doing a few jumping jacks, but I'm able to pivot more. I get jealous seeing people in class able to do all the things I can't do at the moment, but I'll be back into fighting shape soon enough.

I'll finally be able to...

Sometimes I feel like most of my family members don't treat my grandfather with the respect he deserves. He's 90 years old. He's been through some shit and he knows a lot. But people talk around him like he's not even there or like he's stupid, even though he's still perfectly lucid, and sharper than almost everyone I know. Ageism, I guess.

Today I called...

You're so lucky to be able to draw on the wisdom of your grandpa.. I never knew either of my grandfathers. I'm sure I'm less of a person for not having had access to their wisdom.

Your grandpa sounds like someone I'd love to meet.
_bossanova_:
I'm glad he's helping you realize what's important. You're lucky to have him, and I'm sure he knows how lucky he is, too.smile

It never fails. I guess my dad is going to harass me about getting married every time I go home now. He thinks I can't get dates, too.

I almost told him the situation so he'd shut the fuck up, but that's not how I want him to find out.
wsoxfan:
Yes. Being with my family will make a big difference in my demeanor. And meeting Cindy for the first time will hopefully be a great experience for both of us.

I'm glad your mom is on your side, as it will make it easier to approach your dad. Remember, you can't control how he feels and reacts to the news. You can only be responsible for yourself and your feelings about what you're doing.

Sounds to me that you're following your heart. From where I sit, there's no better way to go about doing things.
wsoxfan:
You're welcome. I'm glad some of my wisdom is helpful to people I care about.

I told my mom about my decision to move to Japan. I waited till my dad wasn't home. She was supportive! I know how difficult it will be to win over my dad, though, and I'm not ready to try that yet.

I started by asking her what she thought about me working abroad in Japan, and one of the first things she asked was,...

The worst thing you can ever be is thousands of miles away from the one you love.
wsoxfan:
Funny how people who love you can surprise you in a good way. I'm so glad your mom is supportive.

Maybe she can be your ally when you approach your dad. Having the approval of loved ones is important, but ultimately, you have to live your own life and do what's best for you.

Happiness can be illusive, so if you find it, you need to grab it and hold on. I wish you all the happiness in the world.

I've had some different reactions telling people I'll be moving to Japan. Most of my friends are very happy for me, but I am having some people express doubt about what a big change it would be. The truth is, if there's any time in my life to take off, try a new job, and see if I can have a second chance with someone...

Never made it. Now I won't have the opportunity for a looooooong time... go and live. If it doesn't work, we'll probably let you back in the country. biggrin
