I watched Sweet, Sweets Bad Ass Song today. It was good, compared to most today's movies it pretty tame, but it was still a great find at the library. The part I liked most is Sweet Back is an old school strong silent type. A cool TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS black cowboy/robin hood. I expected the politics to alienate me, but they seemed reasonable to me. Having slept in Mc Arthur Park in LA the shit they cover still happens. In most Hollywood initiations the protagonists always talk to much. Sweet back doesn't talk to much, but runs and kick's ass a plenty. I was turned off by most Blaxploitation movies sappy dialogue, but now that I've seen Melvin Van Peebles OG article I realize that most of that crap was Hollywood bullshit, and I want to see more of Melvin, and other black directors of that time periods work.
basurablanca:
that was a hell of a show. no complaints on the lack of sleep myself either. i'm glad someone else made the sacrifice! haven't seen Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song yet myself, but if you are interested in Blacksploitation you should check out BaadAsssss Cinema. It's a solid documentary about 70's Blacksploitation film making and culture.
