The new Clint Eastwood movie The Mule is, like many of his films, quietly engaging and powerful. Never a flashy "lookit me!" director, this film fits his style effectively. Eastwood gives a damn fine performance, and directs the cast to perfection (many actors have now gotten statues from his movies). Not totally sure why the reviews are a little lukewarm on this one, but it's much better than I was expecting based on them. There's one odd editing choice towards the end (which I will say no more about as it's a spoiler) that hurts the movie, but on the whole this is solid entertainment.
