Martin Scorsese's Silence. I would be lying if I said I was desperately looking forward to a 2 hour 40 minute movie about the persecution of Christians in 17th century Japan, but it's Scorsese, so you go. Period. While it is slow I was never less than enthralled. It was a weighty film, full of scenes where intelligent characters debate things intelligently. Andrew Garfield is especially excellent, but the whole cast is great. Cinematography and editing were, as expected, wonderful. Heartening to see a movie by a 74 year old man that has as much passion as the films of his much younger days. This isn't like Goodfellas or Wolf Of Wall Street--this is more like The Last Temptation Of Christ. Religion is not done well in American film (usually it is the source of ridicule or cheap pandering), so it was fascinating to see one that takes its subject seriously and respectfully. I know you won't, but go see it.
